“If you build it, he will come!”
That’s one of the most memorable lines from the 1989 hit film Field of Dreams; the story of an Iowa farmer who listened to the voices and built a baseball field in the middle of his corn to eventually get that one, very special father/son moment that his heart has been longing for since his father’s passing.
When asked by Shoeless Joe and countless others if this was heaven, the simple answer given was, “No, it’s Iowa.”
And this wasn’t just a line created in Hollywood, but it was actual truth.
In rural Dyersville, Iowa, on the property of the century-old Lansing Family Farm, still sits the baseball diamond and the farm house that the film turned into a very recognizable slice of Americana; and you can have a game of catch on it anytime you want to.
Just like in the film, you are literally driving down a road in-between corn field after corn field, until finally, in the distance the lights surrounding the field begin to emerge in the skyline.
As you step onto the property, you are immediately in awe as you look at the same field that you have seen countless times on your television screen.
You sit on the bleachers and soak it all in; suspending reality as you wonder what will happen if you step across that rock line and onto the field.
When you finally muster up the courage to do so, you immediately run out to the outfield and the rows of corn, poking an arm into it just to see what will happen; you haven’t completely stop believing that when the players disappeared into the corn it was only a bit of movie magic.
There is no admission charge and all are welcomed to play ball of the field, but the house is still occupied so going into it is off limits.
A small souvenir stand has plenty of options from ball caps, to baseballs, bats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and more!
Fun Fact – Try to plan your visit for August, the corn is at its peak height which will make the field look the same as it did in the film.
