Pinch & Dash

Lasagna

This recipe comes from my dear friend David. I’ve done just a touch of tweaking to his original recipe, just don’t tell him that, and it’s a knock your socks off recipe. Below is his original recipe with my added notes. Pair this with a salad and/or some garlic bread and you’ll be one happy camper.

What you’ll need:

1 pound of ground beef
1 pound of Italian sausage *I buy the ground kind since it’s easier to use
Basil – just a pinch
Garlic Powder – 2 teaspoons
Dried Oregano – 1 tablespoon
Black Pepper – 2 teaspoons
Garlic (Minced) – 2 tablespoons
Dried Onion Flakes – 1 tablespoons
28 ounces of marinara sauce (generally, this is about 2 jars) *I usually end up using more than this – almost 3 jars
16 ounces of lasagna noodles *I use the oven ready noodles and those packages don’t usually come in 16 ounces
Ricotta Cheese – 8 ounces *I use 16 ounces
Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded – 1 pound *I use about a pound & a half

How to get your cooking on:

Preheat your over to 375 degrees.
Brown the meat.
When it’s browned, drain any excess grease and add 8 ounces of warm water.
Add in the basil, garlic powder, oregano, black pepper, minced garlic, and onion flakes.
Let it sit on Simmer for about 15 minutes (stir it every couple of minutes or so), and then add in the marinara. Remove it from the stove.
Put some meat and sauce in the bottom of a 9X13 baking dish.
Cover it with a layer of noodles.
Spread some ricotta cheese over the noodles, and then sprinkle some mozzarella over that.
Add another layer of sauce.
Repeat that layering process again (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, and then top it with another layer of meat and sauce).
Once you’re done layering, bake it for about 45 minutes. Check it after about 30 minutes just to make sure everything is going okay (because ovens vary). Check it by putting a knife into the pan. If the noodles are cooking properly, it will be easier to put the knife all the way through it as it cooks to the 45-minute mark.
Once it’s cooked, sprinkle about a ¼ cup of mozzarella over it and cook it another 10 minutes.
